Safety and Transparency

BSA establishes and maintains partnerships with Brookhaven’s surrounding communities to ensure its operations are safe, open, and transparent and that it remains a valued member of the community, advancing its mission with full public support.

Key among these efforts was BSA’s formation of the Community Advisory Council (CAC) in 1998. This very active and engaged group includes community members, civic leaders, environmental organizations, business and educational groups, and employee representatives. The CAC meets monthly and advises BNL’s Laboratory Director on issues of interest, particularly those related to environment, safety and health.

Throughout its management tenure, BSA also has emphasized personnel safety and protection of the environment in its efforts to consistently improve the workplace, including:

• Implementing strong environmental stewardship and groundwater protection programs
• Making significant progress in completing environmental cleanup work, including the successful first-of-its-kind decommissioning of a graphite reactor
• Implementing and sustaining a world-class environmental management system and occupational safety and health program.

Foundation for BSA’s success:

INFORMING…
BSA provides information so communities and stakeholders understand the mission, science, stewardship, and contributions of BNL and BSA.

ENGAGING…
BSA creates relationships through direct, person-to-person contact, knowing that relationships are fundamentally about people understanding people.

INVOLVING…

BSA collaborates with our communities and stakeholders to obtain and use their input in laboratory decisions that affect them or their interests.

CONTRIBUTING

BSA takes direct action to contribute as a member of our communities – intellectually, culturally and economically

One of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security. Brookhaven Lab also builds and operates major scientific facilities available to university, industry and government researchers. Brookhaven is operated and managed for DOE’s Office of Science by Brookhaven Science Associates, a limited-liability company founded by Stony Brook University, the largest academic user of Laboratory facilities, and Battelle, a nonprofit, applied science and technology organization.
