Ronald TownsendRonald Townsend has held the position of Executive Vice President of Global Laboratory Operations since 2009. He oversees Battelle’s role in the management of eight laboratories: six national laboratories for the U.S. Department of Energy, one laboratory for the Department of Homeland Security and a nuclear energy laboratory in the United Kingdom. Prior to joining Battelle, Townsend served as the President of Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and as Commandant of the Air Force Institute of Technology located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Townsend earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from Kansas State University and completed his doctoral degree in meteorology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

One of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security. Brookhaven Lab also builds and operates major scientific facilities available to university, industry and government researchers. Brookhaven is operated and managed for DOE’s Office of Science by Brookhaven Science Associates, a limited-liability company founded by Stony Brook University, the largest academic user of Laboratory facilities, and Battelle, a nonprofit, applied science and technology organization.
